NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jun. 9, 2009-- Piper Jaffray & Co. strengthened its investment banking capabilities with the additions of David Wirdnam and Matt Traina as managing directors. Wirdnam will provide debt advisory and origination services, working with the firm’s debt capital markets and financial restructuring groups. Traina joins the financial sponsors group and will lead the firm’s coverage of west coast financial sponsors. Wirdnam will be based in New York and Traina will be based in San Francisco.

Wirdnam brings more than 15 years of experience in originating, structuring and marketing non-investment grade loans and high yield bonds of all sizes in a wide range of sectors. He joins Piper Jaffray after serving as a managing director in the leveraged finance group at Citigroup in the U.S. and Europe where he led corporate financings for a variety of transactions, including acquisitions; leveraged buyouts, re-capitalizations and distressed financings. Wirdnam earned a degree in business administration from the University of Bath, in Bath, England.

“Helping our clients manage their balance sheet issues is one of our top strategic priorities, and David’s deep experience in the leveraged debt markets adds a critical dimension to our product capabilities,” said Murray Huneke, co-head of investment banking. “He will be a strong complement to our debt capital markets and financial restructuring teams.”

Traina brings more than 14 years of investment banking experience with a majority of the time spent working with financial sponsors in both an advisory and capital raising capacity. He was most recently a senior member of the financial sponsors group at Banc of America Securities. Traina holds a masters of business administration from New York University, Stern School of Business and a bachelor’s of arts degree in English and economics from Middlebury College.

“The west coast financial sponsor community represents a very attractive opportunity for Piper Jaffray as we continue to build out our platform,” said Larry Zimmerman, head of industrials and financial sponsor coverage. “Matt is an experienced and accomplished banker with a number of very strong private equity relationships, and we are thrilled to have him on board with us.”
